A one-time Sync Module 2 and USB drive replace the subscription for recording. Pay for a plan only if you want cloud backup or person and vehicle detection.

Checked against Blink’s plans page and its support articles on October 7, 2026. Blink also sells AI plans: Basic ai at $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and Plus ai at $19.99 a month or $199.99 a year, with a lower first-year price on the annual plans.

What It Costs Over Several Years

Local storage costs money once; a plan costs money every year. The camera itself is left out below because it is the same in every option.

What Works With No Plan at All

Blink’s support page is direct about this: “You don’t have to store motion clips for your Blink camera to work.” Without a plan and without local storage, you still get:

  • Live view
  • Motion alerts
  • Two-way audio

What you don’t get is any saved video, plus the plan features: person and vehicle detection, Blink Moments, custom snooze, and the AI alerts on the ai plans.

Recording Without a Subscription: Sync Module 2 or XR

To save motion clips without paying, Blink supports local storage on two Sync Modules:

  • Sync Module 2 saves clips to a USB flash drive you plug into it. Blink’s Sync Module 2 FAQ says there are no subscription fees to use it, and it supports drives up to 256 GB.
  • Sync Module XR saves clips to a microSD card.

Clips stay until you delete them or the drive fills up. When it’s full, new recordings stop until you free up space, so check the drive now and then.

Two limits are worth knowing. Legacy cameras (the XT, XT2, and Indoor 1st Gen) don’t support local storage. And most important: the Sync Module Core does not support local storage at all, according to Blink’s storage page.

The Bundle Catch: Sync Module Core

This is where buyers get caught out. Several of Blink’s newest Amazon bundles, including Outdoor 4 kits with a battery or wired doorbell, list “Sync Module Core included.” The Core links your cameras, but it can’t save clips to a USB drive. Buy one of those kits expecting free local recording and you’ll find recording only works with a subscription.

The fix is cheap compared with years of a plan: add a Sync Module 2 and a USB drive. Check the bundle description for which Sync Module is included before you buy.

Amazon prices change often, so confirm the current price before buying.

Local storage only lives in your house. If someone takes the Sync Module or the drive, the clips go with it. A plan adds cloud storage for up to 60 days in the US, person and vehicle detection to cut down on alerts from passing cars, and, on Plus, an extended warranty. Basic covers one device; Plus covers every device on the account.

Blink raised US plan prices effective October 8, 2025, according to its support site, so older reviews quoting lower prices are out of date.

Who Should NOT Count on Free Local Storage

If you already bought a kit with a Sync Module Core, or you own an older XT, XT2, or Indoor (1st Gen) camera, free local recording isn’t available as is. Either add a Sync Module 2 (for supported cameras) or budget for a plan. And if theft of the hub itself is your main worry, local storage alone isn’t enough; that’s what cloud backup is for.

FAQ

Does Blink require a subscription? No. Live view, motion alerts, and two-way audio work without one. Saving clips needs either a plan or local storage on a Sync Module 2 or XR.

Can Blink record without a subscription? Yes, with a Sync Module 2 and a USB drive, or a Sync Module XR and a microSD card. The Sync Module Core can’t record locally.

How much is a Blink subscription? Basic is $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year for one device. Plus is $11.99 a month or $119.99 a year for unlimited devices. The AI plans cost $6.99 and $19.99 a month.

Which Blink cameras support local storage? Blink lists the Wired Floodlight, Video Doorbell, Outdoor 4, Outdoor and Indoor (3rd Gen), and Mini as eligible for Sync Module 2 local storage. The XT, XT2, and Indoor (1st Gen) aren’t.

What size USB drive works with the Sync Module 2? Up to 256 GB, per Blink’s Sync Module 2 FAQ.

Bottom Line

  • You want recording with no monthly fee: make sure your kit has a Sync Module 2 or XR, not a Core, and add a USB drive or microSD card.
  • Your kit came with a Sync Module Core: add a Sync Module 2 for free local recording, or pay from $3.99 a month.
  • You want cloud backup and smarter alerts: a Basic or Plus plan is worth it.
