If you want a frame with no recurring bill, Aura is the cleanest choice. You pay once for the frame and every feature is included.

Checked against Aura’s help center, Nixplay’s plan comparison, and Skylight’s Frame Plus page on October 9, 2026.

What’s Included With an Aura Frame

According to Aura, these all come with the frame, with “no ongoing fees required”:

  • Unlimited photo storage
  • Photo and video sharing
  • The Aura app
  • Inviting family and friends to share photos to the frame

That makes Aura a common gift for grandparents. Several people can add photos from their phones, and nobody has to remember to renew a plan. Aura also lets you send a frame as a gift and set it up from the app before it arrives.

The One Requirement: Wi-Fi

Aura’s FAQ says the frames “require WiFi to receive new photos and stay updated.” Without Wi-Fi, the frame keeps showing the photos it already has but won’t get new ones. Setup and management are easiest with the Aura app on a phone; Aura also offers a web uploader for photos from a computer.

If you’re giving a frame to someone without home Wi-Fi, an Aura is the wrong gift. It will only ever show the photos it had the last time it was connected.

How Nixplay and Skylight Compare

Nixplay has a free Basic plan, but it’s limited: 500 MB of photo cloud storage, 500 MB of video storage with clips up to 15 seconds, and one connected album, per Nixplay’s plan comparison. Nixplay Plus, at $29.99 a year, raises that to unlimited photo storage and 50 GB of video with clips up to 2 minutes.

Skylight frames send photos by email or app on the free Basic plan. Skylight’s Frame Plus costs $39 a year, and its plan page lists remote settings, albums, and slideshow mirroring among the features you upgrade for.

Neither plan is expensive on its own. Over five years of use, though, Nixplay Plus adds about $150 and Skylight Plus about $195 to the cost of the frame. With an Aura, that number is zero.

Who Should NOT Buy an Aura

If the person receiving the frame doesn’t have Wi-Fi, skip Aura; it can’t get new photos without it. And if you want a frame that runs entirely offline from a memory card, Aura isn’t built for that either. It’s designed around cloud sharing from phones.

FAQ

Does Aura frame require a subscription? No. Aura says its frames don’t require a subscription, and unlimited photo storage, sharing, and the app are included with the frame.

Is Aura’s photo storage really unlimited? Yes, according to Aura’s help center, unlimited photo storage is included with every frame at no extra cost.

Does an Aura frame work without Wi-Fi? It keeps displaying the photos it already has, but it needs Wi-Fi to receive new ones and to stay updated.

What’s the warranty on an Aura frame? Aura frames include a one-year limited warranty covering manufacturing and hardware defects. Frames bought on auraframes.com have a 90-day return policy.

Is Aura cheaper than Nixplay over time? Usually. Nixplay’s free plan caps photo storage at 500 MB, and Nixplay Plus costs $29.99 a year. Aura has no plan to pay for.

Bottom Line

  • You want a photo frame with no recurring cost: Aura. Storage and sharing are included.
  • The recipient has no Wi-Fi: skip Aura; it needs Wi-Fi for new photos.
  • You’re comparing on price alone: add a few years of Nixplay or Skylight plan fees to their frame price before comparing.
